Do you find yourself saying things like thanks God its Friday?
Do you have that anxious feeling on Sunday evening thinking about the start of a new work week?
Do you dread Mondays or suffer from Monday blues?
It’s not uncommon for most people these days.
The big question is why do we do this to ourselves, for years on end?
Is this really how we were meant to spend our days on this planet?
Think back, year 1995 for example how did you envisage the year 2017 to look like?
Do you remember thinking that may be somehow, magically everything will be done by a click of a button?
With all the advancement of technology today, why do we still have to operate like the previous generation?
When I started my career, I was excited, I couldn’t wait to get out there and start climbing the corporate ladder. Very soon I realised that to get anywhere in the career I was in I had to learn to fit in, conform, become somebody I wasn’t and tick my boss’s boxes.
I struggled. I rebelled.
I believe that as humans we operate in our fullest potential when we are allowed to be free, to be authentic, to be who we really are.
I could not understand that I had to ask permission to be myself, watch every word that came out of my mouth, I couldn’t understand why I had to be somebody else in work.
It made me nervous and uncomfortable.
I can’t understand why we put up with the long hours, the commute, the office politics, and live pay-check to pay-check.
I asked my colleagues and they explained, what else would you be doing? This is what you have to do to afford a few luxuries, pay your rent, mortgage and put food on the table they said.
And I disagreed because it looks to me like without questioning we all seem to be following a system, conforming, glamourising, following the band wagon and even inventing best ways to follow this band wagon!
We fear uncertainty so much that we will do and put up with anything, not only living for the week ends, accepting the Monday blues but also playing the office politics and stab each other’s backs because of this fear.
We have been conditioned to believe that this was the only path.
We have been taught from a young age to trust that if we do xx our lives will turn out yy.
We believe that we have no other options, we fear trying anything new that screams uncertainty.
Imagine if we were told a different story. What would you be doing today? How would your life look like today?
How lucky is the new generation? To have more and better options than we had.
I wish they were more articles like this one when I was growing up…
I want freedom, to live life in my own terms. I don’t want to dread Mondays, I don’t want to have that ugly feeling in my stomach on Sunday evenings dreading going into work!
I want to feel excited for the new week. Thankful to be alive, to be looking forward to a brand-new week.
Is this such a crazy idea? Is this a myth?
The answer is NO! it’s not a myth! The answer is, it’s possible to live a life of total freedom.
Because today there are people out there who are excited that it’s a beautiful Monday morning, they are planning and looking forward to the week so that they can work on things that give them fulfillment and purpose, that allow them to connect with their true essence.
It’s time we start doing what we love, design the lifestyle around the way we work.
Life is too short to dread every Sunday evening and putting up with Monday blues. Imagine how many Sunday evenings and Mondays we have wasted just by accepting the current system?
We have to give up something temporary to gain the freedom we want long-term
How do we do that?
First write down your fears.
Then put them in the bin and start taking chances!
Don’t stop there, learn to love the uncertainty, embrace failure and become bff with disappointment.
It’s not sexy, it’s not glamorous, it sounds like hard work and may be even not that appealing!
But the rewards are tremendous
We have to make the choice, the choice between living for the weekend for the rest of our days on this planet or the uncertainty of starting something new for the next 12-24 months while building the lives of freedom for ourselves.
